![]() The Gaza Strip is 41 kilometres (25 miles) long, from 6 to 12 km (3.7 to 7.5 mi) wide, and has a total area of 365 km 2 (141 sq mi). The UN, as well as at least 19 human-rights organizations, have urged Israel to lift the blockade. The United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and many human-rights organizations regard the blockade (causing shortages of water, electricity, and medicine) as constituting continued military occupation, which Israel disputes. The land, sea, and air blockade prevents people and goods from freely entering or leaving the territory, leading to it often being called an "open-air prison". That group took over the governance of Gaza in a battle the next year, subsequently warring with Israel.Īlthough in 2005 Israel unilaterally withdrew its military forces from Gaza and dismantled its settlements there, Israel implemented a blockade of Gaza, supported by Egypt. The mid-1990s Oslo Accords established the Palestinian Authority to govern both territories, which it did under Palestinian nationalist party Fatah until that party's electoral defeat in 2006 to militant Sunni Islamic organization Hamas. Situated on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Gaza is bordered by Egypt on the southwest and Israel on the east and north.Ĭentral to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, Gaza has been under Israeli military control since 1967. The Gaza Strip ( / ˈ ɡ ɑː z ə/ ⓘ Arabic: قِطَاعُ غَزَّةَ Qiṭāʿ Ġazzah ), or simply Gaza, is the smaller of the two Palestinian territories (the other being the West Bank). However, Israel and other legal scholars dispute this. ![]() ^ Although Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, the United Nations, international human rights organizations and many legal scholars regard the Gaza Strip to still be under military occupation by Israel, as Israel still maintains direct control over Gaza's air and maritime space, six of Gaza's seven land crossings, a no-go buffer zone within the territory, and the Palestinian population registry.^ The State of Palestine is recognized by 138 members of the United Nations as well as the Holy See.
